Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, made a huge donation to Habitat for Humanities and some of that money came to Tampa Bay. Scott donated $436 million to Habitat for Humanities International and 84 of its affiliates.

Two of the 84 affiliates that received money are right here in the Tampa Bay area. Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas and West Pasco received $11 million, which is their largest single gift in their history. Habitat for Humanity of Hillsborough County received $7.5 million.

Mike Sutton, who is the CEO of the Pinellas and West Pasco Chapter said the money will be used to help offset rising construction costs. It also will help fund subdivisions in Largo, Clearwater and New Port Richey.

“This gift will allow us to do so much more above and beyond what we normally do,” Sutton said. “It’s a blessing because it’s coming at a time when we have to find gap financing and find gap donations to make up that difference we’re seeing with increases in costs.”

The Hillsborough chapter will use the money to help it increase capacity and close the wealth gap in the county, which has the lowest rate of homeownership in Tampa Bay.
