Tampa Bay Native Uses His Skateboard To Raise Awareness In Florida
Talk about learning-by-the-mile! This Tampa Bay native is using his skateboard to raise environmental awareness in Florida.
St. Petersburg’s Justin Bright is putting miles on his skateboard to let Sunshine State residents know what is the current state of Florida’s environment. Justin’s journey started at the Alabama-Florida border and will end in Key West. All in all, this Tampa Bay native will be putting 1,000 miles on his skateboard.
Justin is combining his knowledge of journalism and the environment, which he learned at the University of Florida, with his passion for skateboarding. His unique view of Florida’s ecosystem will help shine a light on what needs to be done to balance nature and growth.
So far the trek across Florida has been eye-opening for Justin. “This trip definitely hasn’t been a joy ride. It’s not always safe, or comfortable, or you know warm or dry all the time,” Justin said. He starts his day around sunrise and gets about 30 miles on his wheels before he sets up camp.
What insight does Justin want to share about his journey so far? “Rather than stressing about the future and focusing on the present and relying on that and what you can control has helped me overcome a lot of mental challenges,” Justin said. “Just truly the ability to overcome long-term challenges just by staying in the present.”
