Police find Florida Man standing on top of a sinking airplane in the middle of the Gulf. U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents say they were cruising the waters of the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Florida when they saw a man emerging from a sinking airplane.

They say he had managed to get onto the roof of the partially submerged aircraft as it took on water. Once on the roof of the fuselage, he waved his arms for attention. By sheer chance, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection crew was in the area on patrol, probably saving the pilot’s life.

When he was first discovered, the man appeared to be standing on open water. But when they got closer, they realized that he was actually standing on a crashed airplane….in open water…that was sinking quickly. Trained agents sprang into action, moving expertly to pull the man from the downed aircraft. Once he was safe and aboard the patrol vessel, authorities questioned the man and determined that he was the only person onboard when the airplane crashed into the Gulf.

While the man was not identified, police say he was given a medical examination on site and later treated by local emergency responders. Agents say the man was very lucky that they were nearby when the plane went into the water. Authorities say the airplane was only about a mile from a local airport when it went down.
