Weekdays 10a-3p

We’ve been there many times with all 3 of your daughters. Crystal River, every season when the Manatees (gentle Giants) gather. Always a special trip. Being on a paddleboard most every week, we also see the gentle giants all over Tampa Bay and the beaches. We know when and where they gather most. Or, maybe the Manatees know when and where we will be paddling? They share their home with us. We know what to do, and not to do when there is interaction. Always with respect, and appreciation.

Then, there’s the downside. All the “prop” marks you can see on Manatee backs. Even worse the dwindling numbers. We’ve heard it before. But this year, more than 3 times the usual rate. An estimated close to 600 died last year. Why? Pollution causing the loss of seagrass is the first answer. They are starving. “HEART BREAKER! ”

Advocates want them “back” on the endangered species list. If you’re out on or near the water often, please save this number in your phone.

FWC’s Wildlife Alert Toll-Free Number: 1-888-404-FWCC (1-888-404-3922), press “7” to speak with an operator. If you see an injured or sick manatee, call. Don’t feed it, or try to help. Experts say we may be making things worse by intervening.

I trust dogs and horses, love country music, and country fried chicken. Fought many men, and loved only 1 woman. She's from Nashville, so the accent. Life is short. Make somebody smile, Dog-gonnit. Haaaaaa.
