Blake Shelton’s New ‘Minimum Wage’ Draws Complaints
Blake Shelton sang a new song on NBC’s New Year’s Eve television special on Thursday night (12/31) to share the video for a new song titled “Minimum Wage” and because of fan reaction, the song was removed from the internet.
Before he released a video of the new song, he told fans it was directed by Gwen Stefani’s brother Todd, who also directed the couple’s “Happy Anywhere” video.
Fans quickly began to react to the video negatively. As one fan tweeted, “Usually don’t care about this stuff but…Millionaire country singer Blake Shelton debuting a song on NBC about how love can make them feel rich on minimum wage. Odd timing with millions unemployed and struggling during a pandemic.”

Other fans agreed saying things like, “Thought the same thing. Then I considered his audience and realized it’s just good marketing.”
A couple fans defended the song saying, “Let’s spread some love! So much picking at each other and putting each other down. It is a song about love. Lighten up!”

Neither Shelton nor his camp has responded to the controversy although Blake’s buddy Ronnie Dunn defended the song saying on Twitter, “Now they want to attack country singers for being successful. I slept on a mattress on the floor in a musician friend’s spare bedroom and played beer joins / dive bars for years before I ever made $100. Most country singers pay dues and go through things to become successful that no sane human being would.”

The song’s (“Minimum Wage”) lyrics sings in part, “You can make a six pack on the carpet / Taste like a million dollar bill / You can make a one bedroom apartment / Feel like a house up on the hill / You can make my truck out in the driveway / Roll like a cleaned up Cadillac / Girl, lookin’ at you lookin’ at me that way / Can make a man feel rich on minimum wage.”
