Horseback riding near the Sunshine Skyway bridge has been gaining in popularity and environmentalists are not happy about it.
Allegedly, the horses’ paths go right through sea algae that people want protected. On top of the sea algae issue, there have been complaints that the horses’ urine and feces are polluting the water.
The Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council has issued a letter to both the Pinellas County Commission and Florida Department of Environmental Protection in support of banning recreational horseback riding in the waters of Tampa Bay, north of the Sunshine Skyway.
If you drive near the Sunshine Skyway bridge, you’ve probably seen the horses that they’re talking about.
The horseback riding companies that run the local tours would take a huge hit. They are also worried about what will happen to their nearly two dozen rescue horses.
