Definitely want to take advantage of this during Summer Break!
Now this is a great idea. The Children’s Board of Hillsborough County and Hillsborough County government is offering free swimming lessons to kids during the Summer. Here’s how it works: Certified instructors go to pools at community centers, apartment complexes, and elsewhere to give free lessons in basic water safety/swimming skills. Children ages 3-14 are eligible.
Up to 24 children may participate in each one-week session. Classes are offered Monday through Friday, with each one lasting 45 minutes. Parents/guardians also receive water safety and CPR instruction.
The swimming lessons will be offered at Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA and Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center.
In 2018, 11 children drowned in Hillsborough County, 6 children drowned in Pasco County. Drowning is the leading cause of preventable deaths among Tampa Bay area girls and boys ages 1-5. The number of drowning deaths in the state in 2018 was up 7 percent from the prior year, reaching a total of 88.
