The 145th running of the Kentucky Derby is happening this Saturday at Churchill Downs.
I love watching the Derby! Every year my friends and I get all dressed up and drink mint juleps and watch the race. It’s a fun event, even if you’re not into horse racing. I’ve never been to the Kentucky Derby…definitely on my bucket list tho.
I never bet on the horses, but I think I am going to this year because the purse for the Derby was just raised to $3 million!!!! Last year it was $2 million, which had been the overall prize since 2005. From 1996 and 2004, it was $1 million.
The winner receives $1.86 million. O.M.G.
The runner-up will earn $600,000
3rd place is $300,000
4th place $150,000
5th place is $90,000.
The second and third legs of the Triple Crown . . . the Preakness and Belmont stakes . . . both offer total purses of $1.5 million. The Preakness is happening on Saturday, May 19th, followed by the Belmont Stakes on June 8th.
Now…Who should we put our money on??
The Kentucky Derby post positions were announced yesterday.
Omaha Beach has the best odds at 4-to-1.
Game Winner is close behind at 5-to-1
Improbable and Roadster, both at 6-to-1.
There will probably be around 160,000 fans to Churchill Downs, there is rain in the forecast, so it might be wet . . . This year’s race will air on NBC at 6:50 P.M. Eastern.
19 million people will be watching the race….back in 1875 – there were no viewers…lol
