It’s Official: Tampa Is Getting a Team In The New XFL
December 5, 2018 Update:
The XFL just made it official. Tampa will be one of 8 cities to have a team in the new XFL launching in 2020 at Raymond James Stadium. The first season will start February 8 and 9, just after the Super Bowl. Promising “less stall and more ball,” the XFL says they will “re-imagine” football. They say that means things like a shorter play clock, changes to punts, and fewer TV timeouts. They say it’ll be an affordable, family-friendly experience. Hillsborough County Commissioner Ken Hagan said at the press conference that Tampa’s passion for football will be a perfect fit. He says in Tampa Bay, “It’s game day everyday.”
Original story from December 1:
Vince McMahon has chosen Raymond James Stadium! No… not for WrestleMania. At least not yet. Although that still seems to be a possibility.
The Tampa Bay Times reports this morning that Tampa will be one of the cities to have a team in the revamped XFL. They say no official announcement has been made but that the phone numbers for 8 teams suddenly appeared on the XFL website Friday. When you called the number, the message was “Thanks for calling XFL Tampa Bay. We’re excited to call Raymond James Stadium home when the league launches in 2020.”
No word yet on what the team will be called. The other cities that were on the list were Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, St. Louis, Seattle and Washington.
