Midland Suggests Country Music Is Changing

You may have heard about the new Texas trio Midland.

Their debut single "Drinkin' Problem" is climbing the charts and they're getting lots of attention for their unique sound and background. They were recently featured by Rolling Stone, which suggested that they had the potential to "unite traditional and pop-leaning fans of country music."

"It was just sort of something that we stumbled on," the trio's Cameron Duddy explained of their sound. "That's just the style that came out. It was never a conversation like, 'Dude, we should sound like this or that.' We just started playing. That was what happened."

That said, there's been at least a little pushback from country purists over their past. Midland's Mark Wystratch is a former male model, for example; Duddy is a former music video director; and Jess Carson is a vintage clothier – not exactly the typical country music backstory. Midland has some high-placed supporters, though, like legendary country songwriter Dean Dillon. "Some [musicians] come in with an attitude: 'I'm going to set the world on fire, and if I don't do that in two years, I'm going home,'" he told Rolling Stone. "I think these guys, they're committed. They didn't come to Nashville give it a shot. I honestly believe they're in it for the long haul."

It's hard to argue that the future doesn't look bright for the new trio. "Country music's changing, and it's really exciting to be near the spear tip of that change," Duddy explained in the publication. "I think we just happen to be at the right place at the right time. We're enjoying the journey, every single part of it." Read more here. Listen again...and again...and again to "Drinkin' Problem" below. Check out their touring schedule here.
