Fun Fact: Spiders Could Eat Every Human on Earth in a Year

According to an article published by the San Francisco Chronicle, the current population of spiders could eat every human in a year. Yes, that is right. Every arachnoid’s fear is slowly coming true. Afraid of spiders? Well, we suggest you to not read any farther…and possibly move off of the planet.

Martin Nyffeler and Klaus Birkhofer, two European Biologists, recently performed a study calculating all of the spiders on Earth. They came to a conclusion that spiders eat approximately 400 to 800 millions tons of prey per year. This number means that they would be able to “eat as much meat as all 7 billion humans on the planet combined.” Humans, compared to spiders, eat about 400 million tons of meat and fish per year.

The two biologist also calculated that every adult human takes up approximately 287 million tons of biomass. Children, on the other hand, add an extra 70 million onto that number. If you calculate the two numbers together, that still is not the total amount humans eat each year. Pretty freaky, right?

Spiders could theoretically eat every human on Earth in one year.

The best part of this scientific finding that, even after they depleted the human race, spiders would still be hungry afterwards!

In order to calculate this number, Nyffeler and Birkhofer took the number of spiders that live in a square meter of land and the average amount of food the insect eats. To make this finding even freakier, it is estimated that there are approximately 131 spiders per square meter. That means, no matter where you are right now, there is probably a spider staring at you as you read this article!

If you were some sort of Eliza Thornberry of spiders and decided to collect all of them on Earth, they would weigh 25 million tons. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Titanic weighted 52,000. Those spiders weigh more than a legendary ship and would equate out to 478 Titanics!

So, what we are trying to say, is befriend your local spider friend. One day, when you are not looking, they might just get hungry and decide to chomp on you!
