Top Tips For Fighting Holiday Weight Gain
The holiday season is full of gift-giving, quality time with family, and an abundance of delicious treats that are hard to resist. If you’re starting to feel that holiday weight creep up, fear not. You can have your brownies and eat them too, promise. Here are some tips for fighting the battle of the bulge without sacrificing the treats you love the most:
Be selective about the foods you sample
While it’s okay to enjoy a few treats, be picky about what you try. If the sugar cookies look irresistible, have one. Just don’t have a piece of pie too. You don’t have to deprive yourself, but make sure you’re really enjoying what you’re eating.
Pack accordingly as you travel
You don’t want to get stuck chowing down on greasy pizza or Chinese food because you forgot to pack snacks to munch on during your layover. Before you go, toss trail mix or a protein bar in your bag to tide you over.
Spoil your own appetite
It sounds counterintuitive, but when you show up to a party absolutely famished, you’re going to grab whatever you can get your hands on as quickly as possible. This sets you up to overeat. Instead, have a healthy snack before you go. You’ll be able to make smarter choices when you arrive and the dessert table catches your eye.
Don’t cave to peer pressure
If you’re trying to be conscious about your diet during this time of year, don’t feel obligated to grab a huge piece of cake just because everyone else in the office is enjoying it. You can gather in the cafeteria and enjoy the social aspect of the experience without the calories.
Go easy on the alcohol
It’s packed with empty calories, and it also limits your inhibitions, so you might find yourself going back for seconds or reaching for an unhealthy treat when you wouldn’t normally do so.
Sneak exercise into the day
You may feel stretched thin during the holiday season, and find that your regular workouts are falling by the wayside. Even if you aren’t hitting the gym as often as you’d like, find other ways to get exercise in. Take the dog for a longer walk, park your car further away when you’re headed to the grocery store, or deep clean the house. It may not be a formal exercise class, but you can still burn calories.
